Red Cross Blood Service App
In the “Blood Donor Application” project for the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service, my role was to define and refine the user experience and interface design. I focused on creating the application’s look and feel, ensuring that the design not only appealed visually but also facilitated ease of use and accessibility. Throughout the development process, I conducted user testing sessions to gather feedback and identify areas for improvement, making sure that the application met the users’ needs effectively. Additionally, I contributed to the motion design aspect of the project, creating animations that enhanced user interaction and engagement. This application aims to encourage and simplify the process of blood donation, making it a regular part of donors’ lives through a user-friendly digital service. My work on this project was driven by a deep understanding of the importance of blood donation and the need for a seamless user experience to motivate and retain donors.

An app for lifesavers
I played a pivotal role in crafting a digital solution that turns everyday individuals into lifesavers. Our challenge was to ensure the continuous availability of blood products for patient care, requiring daily donations to meet the healthcare sector’s needs, especially during emergencies. To overcome this, we needed innovative strategies to engage and re-engage donors regularly.
Our approach
Our approach combined participatory design with user feedback, focusing on making blood donation a part of donors’ routines through personalized guidance, reminders, and clear communication about the donation process and its impact. The application aimed to make donating blood a hassle-free and rewarding experience, encouraging regular and new donors by allowing them to track their donations, receive reminders, and find the nearest donation center.
First Version
Released in late 2023, the first version of the app offers features like tracking donation history, checking eligibility for the next donation, and providing emergency communication tools. It was designed to be an integral part of the donor’s journey, enhancing the blood donation process and supporting the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service’s goal of ensuring a stable blood supply. The app’s success, evidenced by thousands of downloads and positive feedback within the first week, underscores the critical role of digital solutions in modern healthcare and community service.
Checking the next possible donation time
The application allows users an easy way to check the next possible donation time. The application tells when the user can donate blood next time, taking into account the appropriate donation intervals and any restrictions placed on the person.
Finding the nearest donation point
The application provides users with location-based information about the nearest donation location as well as the necessary information, such as the address, opening hours and contact information. Through the application, it is possible to book an appointment or fill out a health questionnaire.
You Donation information
The application allows users to track their donation history and important information such as the date of the last visit, their blood type and any health information such as hemoglobin information.
Security of Supply
Additional tools for managing crisis situations, such as major accidents. The emergency communication feature can be used to guide donors in the event of major accidents, for example. The blood group information displayed in the application is important, for example, when information systems crash.
